📖 Understanding Scale Formulas, Step Codes & Degree Intervals
In music theory, every scale is built upon an exact mathematical sequence of distances (intervals) between notes within the 12-tone chromatic system. This guide uses three standard notations so you can read and apply scale formulas effortlessly:
1. Tone & Semitone Code (T / S)
Represents distances in step names where T = Tone (2 semitones / 2 frets) and S = Semitone (1 semitone / 1 fret). For example, T-T-S-T-T-T-S is the standard Major Scale formula.
2. Step Number Sequence (Numeric)
Displays the exact number of frets or semitones between consecutive notes. For instance, 2-2-1-2-2-2-1 is identical to T-T-S-T-T-T-S. A value of 3 represents a minor third jump (3 semitones).
3. Scale Degree Interval Notation
Measures each note relative to the Root note (1). Symbols like ♭3 indicate a flat 3rd (minor third), ♯4 indicates an augmented 4th, and ♭7 indicates a minor 7th degree.
